# Arthrocentesis of the TMJ

Arthrocentesis, often called joint lavage or irrigation, is a minimally invasive procedure that involves inserting one or two needles into the jaw joint cavity, draining the inflammatory fluid, and washing it with physiological solution. At the end of the operation, an anti-inflammatory drug and/or lubricant and/or plasma are injected into the joint. The operation is done with local anesthesia or under light sedation.

The main indication for joint lavage is inflammation (arthritis). The irrigation process usually takes a few minutes, and its results (reduction of inflammation and pain) are usually visible within 1 to 3 weeks.
